What is a Dermatologist?

Dermatology is the medical science of diagnosing and treating skin diseases affecting the skin, hair and nails. It is a speciality with both medical and surgical aspects.

Dermatologists are medical specialists trained in the diagnosis, treatment and management of all skin diseases including skin cancer.

The skin is the largest organ in the body and includes hair, nails, the wet areas of the mouth and genitals.

It takes ten years minimum to become a qualified dermatologist and requires medical training and then accredited specialty training, with four years to complete a Fellowship of the Australasian college of Dermatologists.
